Quick Facts

- The majority of cattle in the United States are raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFO's)

- CAFO's foster stressful environments for the cattle which decrease thier immune system and increase the spread of bacteria and disease

- CAFO's made the creation of factory farms possible, the definition for a factory farm for dairy and beef cattle is 500 or more heads

- Beef factory farms make up 1.8% of all of the beef farms in the United States, but these huge agribusiness are able to produce 76.5% of the total beef cattle

- Corn and other grains such as soy is the primary feed for animals in CAFO's

- The consolidation of these huge businesses has led to a big mess, the manure produced by just one of these dairy or beef factory farms is as much as the waste produced in America's largest cities
